What we do
Our 5 areas of action

SELF tackles the obstacles that prevent children and families from

growing, learning, and succeeding.

We achieve this by ensuring that children are in school and learning, that disadvantaged youths and families are empowered with essential livelihood and marketable vocational skills, that the health conditions of community members is improved, that women are empowered to be self-reliant and active members in the development of their communities, and ensuring the timely response to emergency needs of individuals and family units weakened by crises, disability, poverty, and other tragedies.

EDUCATION PROGRAM

Improve educational outcomes,
increase literacy, and empower children and adults to learn, grow, and build a better future.

  • Literacy and numeracy classes: Offer after-school or weekend Catch-up classes for class 6 children struggling in school; offer targeted literacy and numeracy classes for children at risk of dropping out; and also organize adult literacy classes to support the learning needs of adults.

  • Educational scholarships and school supplies: Provide scholarships, uniforms, and educational supplies to children from low-income households.

  • School supplies and materials: Provide teaching materials, library books, and infrastructure improvements to disadvantaged schools, enhancing the learning environment.

  • Awareness campaign on the importance of education: Conduct outreach to communities on the benefits of education, especially for girls and marginalized children.

LIVELIHOOD AND ECONOMIC WELL-BEING

Enhance the economic independence, resilience, and life skills of low-resource families and marginalized groups.
  • Vocational training and job readiness: Offer vocational training in skills such as tailoring, embroidery, catering, computer literacy, and entrepreneurship; and organize job readiness workshops that focus on resume building, interview preparation, and soft skills like communication and teamwork.

  • Micro-enterprise and small business development: Provide training on business management, financial literacy, and market access for women and youth interested in starting their own businesses; and offer micro-loans or grants for individuals or small groups to start small businesses.

  • Financial literacy workshops: Educate communities on managing household finances, saving, budgeting, and understanding financial products.

LIVELIHOOD AND ECONOMIC WELL-BEING

HEALTHCARE

Improve overall health and well-being, prevent disease, and promote health education to empower individuals particularly in underserved communities to lead healthier lives.

  • Health education and awareness: Conducting health workshops and campaigns to educate communities on topics like hygiene, nutrition, disease prevention, first aid, sexual and reproductive health, HIV, and drug addiction and abuse.

  • Emergency medical response: Responding to health emergencies such as epidemics, natural disasters, or conflict situations by providing medical care, supplies, and support to affected populations.

CHILD PROTECTION

Ensure the safety and well-being of children by preventing abuse and providing support for vulnerable children.
  • Awareness campaigns: Sensitizing and educating communities about children's rights, abuse prevention, and safe practices.

  • Case management: Providing individualized support to at-risk children, including shelter, healthcare, and education.

  • Family strengthening: Offering programs that strengthen families to prevent situations of neglect or abuse.

  • Training and capacity building: Training caregivers, teachers, and community members on child protection policies and practices.

  • Emergency Response: Responding to child protection issues in emergencies, such as natural disasters or conflicts.

  • Psychosocial Support: Offering counseling and therapy to children affected by trauma, abuse, or neglect.

  • Safe Spaces: Create safe environments for children to learn and grow, free from violence, exploitation, and abuse.

CHILD PROTECTION

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

Promote gender equality and provide women with the skills, resources, and support needed to become self-reliant and active members in the development of their communities.

  • Skills training: Offering workshops on vocational, financial literacy, and leadership skills; and providing  access to microloans, grants, and business support to empower women to start or grow their businesses and achieve economic independence.

  • Health and wellness programs: Educating women on reproductive health, menstrual health management, and other aspects of personal health, with a focus on preventing GBV.

  • Gender-based violence prevention: Conducting awareness campaigns and workshops to educate communities on the causes, impact, and prevention of GBV, while advocating for stronger protection measures.

  • Support for GBV survivors: Offering legal assistance, counseling, and shelter for women who have experienced violence, and connecting them with support services.

  • Advocacy and awareness: Raising awareness about women’s rights, gender equality, and the importance of women’s active participation in leadership and decision-making roles.
