The Saika Elisabeth Foundation (SELF), in partnership with the Canadian Funds for Local Initiatives, has successfully completed the first phase of its project aimed at restoring the dignity and well-being of girls and women in Jakiri municipality. This project, which focuses on training women to produce reusable sanitary pads and providing menstrual health education, has reached a significant milestone.
Key Achievements:
Supervision and Support for Pad Production: During the reporting period from October 16 to 31, 2024, regular supervision sessions were conducted at each of the eight reusable pad production centers. This ensured that trained women and girls had access to all necessary materials and tools, culminating in the successful production of 100 reusable pads per center, ready for distribution.
Menstrual Health Education and Awareness Campaign: In Tan village, a tailored education campaign specifically targeted Bororo women, covering menstrual hygiene, health implications, and benefits of reusable products. The campaign effectively distributed 100 free reusable sanitary pads, fostering understanding and acceptance.
Engagement with Local Schools: Meetings with local school authorities highlighted the need for adequate water access and girl-friendly latrines. Advocating for designated washing and changing areas aims to enhance school attendance and performance among menstruating girls.
Challenges and Solutions:
Weather-Related Accessibility Issues: Heavy and frequent rains affected road conditions, complicating mobilization. To address this, flexible project planning was adopted, adjusting timelines and prioritizing activities during improved weather conditions.
Our Next Steps:
From November 1 to 15, 2024, the project will organize open forums to facilitate discussions on menstrual health, train male teachers to lead menstrual hygiene campaigns, and continue education and sensitization efforts. Free reusable sanitary pads will be distributed in targeted areas.
The project is progressing well, with strong plans for the next phase despite challenges. Proactive measures have ensured continued momentum, and community support and participant dedication remain key to sustaining the project's impact.
