Saika Elisabeth Foundation (SELF) donates library books to AVEMAHENA Resource Center in Shiy village Jakiri Sub Division; thanks to Street Child of Cameroon.
Ensuring access to a quality education for all children around the world is the fourth UN Global Goal for Sustainable Development. But for kids living in crisis, even the simplest materials are all too often lacking; making achieving this goal incredibly challenging.
It is against this background that through our education in emergency program, SELF strives to provide library books to schools in Bui Division where the barriers to reading and learning are at their most challenging worsened by the ongoing crisis in the region which has closed so many schools in which children were already struggling to learn, with very few books between them.
Thanks to Street Child of Cameroon, Saika Elisabeth Foundation was able to donate new library textbooks to the AVEMAHENA Resource Center Shiy on Friday 19th April, 2024. Talking to beneficiary students and teachers of AVEMAHENA Resource Center, the SELF Projects Coordinator for Bui, Shey. Vernyuy Pascal emphasized that the library books were intended to help students become confident readers, curious learners and, eventually, school leavers with ambition to succeed. He also stressed that the library books could also support teachers in creating rich, engaging lessons and offer a valuable resource for the whole community to access and enjoy
On her part, the principal of AVEMAHENA, Mme. Vernyuy Delphine thanked SELF and Street Child of Cameroon for the kind gesture and stressed that the donation was very timely as her students were in dire need of a school library to enhance their education. While wishing for a strong partnership between SELF and AVEMAHENA, she promised that both teachers and students were going to make very good use of the books to enhance the teaching/learning process; widen their horizon on things that surround them; and improve academic performance.
The SELF School Library Project for Schools is committed to providing access to educational resources for school- aged children, particularly those from low-income areas affected by crisis. The intervention involves collecting and donating books to local schools with the purpose of bridging the learning gap caused by crisis and poverty; and
provide children with books that are considered a crucial educational resource. The project team in collaboration with school authorities identifies their needs, and solicit book donations from individuals and organizations. Through this project, SELF hopes to inspire a love for reading among children, which is essential for their cognitive development.
