The Saika Elisabeth Foundation (SELF), with the support of the Canadian Funds for Local Initiatives, is dedicated to restoring the dignity and well-being of girls and women in Jakiri Municipality. From December 1st to 15th, 2024, the project advanced its efforts in menstrual health education, de-stigmatization campaigns, and the distribution of reusable sanitary pads, empowering communities and promoting sustainable menstrual hygiene solutions.
Achievements: Education and Outreach
Community Dialogues: Dialogues with community leaders were held in Kifom, Gwartang, and Nkar to foster support for menstrual health initiatives. These meetings aimed to mobilize community leaders to advocate for menstrual health education and reduce stigma.
Open Forum Discussions: Successful open forums took place in Noi, Gwartang, and Shiy, where over 50 participants engaged in conversations about menstruation as a natural biological process. These discussions helped break the silence surrounding menstruation and encouraged a supportive atmosphere for women and girls.
Engaging Community Leaders: More than 35 men, including local leaders, participated in sensitization sessions. They expressed a strong commitment to share knowledge within their communities, emphasizing the importance of their roles in promoting menstrual health awareness.
Distribution of Reusable Sanitary Pads
Approximately 280 reusable sanitary pads were distributed to participants in the aforementioned communities. Recipients received education on the proper use and maintenance of these pads, fostering sustainable hygiene practices.
Addressing Challenges
Insecurity: Increased insecurity in the municipality posed challenges for staff and participants. The project emphasized careful planning and monitoring to ensure safety during all activities.
Farming Season Conflicts: The ongoing farming season limited attendance at events. To address this, sensitization sessions were rescheduled to Sundays, when community members were more likely to be available.
School Examination Period: Conflicts due to school exams restricted engagement opportunities. Plans were made to conduct sessions following the examination period, maximizing participation.
Looking Ahead: Planned Activities for Late December
In the coming weeks, the project will focus on:
Continuing open forums to promote discussions around menstrual health.
Utilizing end-of-year gatherings to conduct sensitization and interactive discussions on menstrual hygiene.
Ongoing distribution of reusable sanitary pads and continued education campaigns in remaining project villages.
Conducting feedback sessions to assess the project's impact and gather community insights.
The project remains committed to improving menstrual health awareness and empowering women and girls in Jakiri Municipality, ensuring sustained community involvement and positive outcomes.
